On 29 March 2023, United Nations General Assembly approved the resolution A/77/L.58 that requested for an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the obligations of States in respect of climate change. The historic motion came from the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu and was supported by more than 130 countries. Founding Director of C-EENRG, Professor Jorge Viñuales, was part of the legal team that advised Vanuatu on the drafting of the resolution that started four years ago as an initiative of 27 law students of the University of the South Pacific campus in Fiji.
