On 25 April 2023, CEENRG Director Professor Laura Diaz Anadon chaired a book launch event and conversation about the book 'Five Times Faster: Rethinking the Science, Economics, and Diplomacy of Climate Change' by Simon Sharpe. Simon Sharpe has worked at the forefront of climate change policy and diplomacy in the UK for the past ten years, and he is currently Director of Economics for the Climate Champions Team, and a Senior Fellow at the World Resources Institute. The event, held in Christ's College, University of Cambridge, was organised by Christ’s College, Cambridge Zero Policy Forum and Centre for Science and Policy (CSaP).

The book is about under-recognised opportunities to make faster progress in countering climate change. Limiting warming to 1.5°C means decarbonizing the global economy five times faster this decade than we managed over the last two decades. As Greenland melts, Australia burns, and greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, we think we know who the villains are: oil companies, consumerism, weak political leaders. But what if the real blocks to progress are the ideas and institutions that are supposed to be helping us? This book argues that in our fight to avoid dangerous climate change, science is pulling its punches, diplomacy is picking the wrong battles, and economics has been fighting for the other side. We need to rethink our efforts, to act fast enough to stay safe.
